Welcome to Hudson Wren Portraits

A Heritage Portrait House.

We create black-and-white portraits for families who believe memory deserves permanence.

Our work is not made for trends, timelines, or screens. It is made to endure. Each portrait is commissioned, guided, and crafted with the intention that it will outlive the moment it was made and remain meaningful for generations to come.

We work exclusively in black and white to remove era, fashion, and distraction. What remains is character, connection, and truth.

Hudson Wren portraits are archival by design. Printed to last centuries. Created to become part of a family’s visual history.

This is not photography for today.
This is portraiture for the long arc of a life.

Our studio locations: Victoria and Vancouver

When you photograph people in colour, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls!

Your portraits are ready. Now they need a home.

What families typically invest

Every family leaves their ordering appointment with something different. Some choose a single portrait for a desk. Others build an entire wall around the story we made together. Our artwork is entirely à la carte — pick exactly what speaks to you, in any combination.

Matted Fine Art Portrait — from $600

The starting point. Each portrait is printed on archival fine art paper, matted to 11×14, and ready to frame or display. Archival for 200+ years. A quiet, lasting thing — and the natural beginning of a triptych if you find yourself wanting more than one.

Statement Wall Portrait — from $1,600

Our ready-to-frame 16×20 mega-matted portrait is where most families begin when they want something that commands a space. Above a console. At the end of a hallway. Somewhere you walk past every single day, and it stops you for just a moment.

Wall Series and Collections — from $2,300

For families who want more than one portrait to tell the story. Our 6 + 6 begins here. This is what fills a hallway, anchors a living room, or turns a staircase into something worth climbing.

How it works

You do not choose your artwork today. You choose it at your private ordering appointment, held via Zoom within two weeks of your session. You will see your portraits the way they were meant to be seen. We will guide you through every option. There is no pressure and no rush.

Your ordering appointment is where most families are surprised by what they feel when they see their images for the first time. Come prepared to be moved.

Session fee — $450 Covers your consultation, your portrait session, and your Zoom ordering appointment. Collected when you book.

Delivery Day

Your artwork has been handcrafted, and it is on its way.

Perhaps you chose a statement piece for the wall above your fireplace. Perhaps you ordered a portrait box with a collection of the best portraits. Your artwork arrives carefully packaged, ready to enjoy.

This is the part clients talk about. The unboxing. The first time it goes on the wall. The moment a child sees their own portrait hanging in the home, they understand, without anyone saying a word, that they matter.

Your digital portraits are delivered via private link, fully edited in our signature style, ready to share the moment you receive them.

Most wall pieces and boxes arrive within 6 to 8 weeks. Digital collections within 2 weeks.

A note on wall art in your home.

If you have a wall in mind, take a photo of it before your ordering appointment. We will mock up your portraits directly onto your wall so you can see exactly how they will look before you commit to anything. Clients find this one of the most useful parts of the process.

The most popular locations: above a console in the entry, over a bed, along a staircase, or above the sofa in a living room. Wherever you spend time. Wherever guests pause.

Display your Bond.

Pricing and products are subject to change. All artwork is archival and handcrafted. A lifetime guarantee applies to all Hudson Wren portrait artwork.

Payment & Flex Pay

We accept Visa or Mastercard. Full payment is required at the time of order.

For clients who would like to spread their investment over time, we offer Hudson Wren Flex Pay. Place a deposit, and we will work out a bi-weekly payment plan together — available over 4, 6, 12, or 18 months. Your artwork goes into production once your plan is confirmed.

"Black and white photography is about capturing the essence of a subject, highlighting its forms, textures, and contrasts. It allows us to see beyond the colours and delve into the soul of the image." - Unknown

Many clients, new to this kind of bespoke portrait experience, often find themselves pleasantly surprised by the beauty and quality of our work. This isn't a standard, cookie-cutter experience. Where shall I hang my artwork?

Where to hang your artwork is a personal choice and often depends on where you spend most of your time. Many of our clients love displaying their portraits in high-traffic areas like the dining room or above the living room fireplace, enjoying their art frequently.

Others prefer making a statement right at the entrance, giving guests a glimpse of their family's bond as soon as they walk in. If you have a home filled with artwork, consider more personal spaces like the children's bedrooms, playrooms, or even your master bedroom.

Family-oriented hallways or gallery walls dedicated to family history can also make a fantastic backdrop for your portraits. The stairway, another popular option, can create a beautiful visual journey as you ascend. Ultimately, choose a place where your portrait can be appreciated and admired daily.

I hate myself in photos!

We understand your concerns but rest assured, you're in good hands with Hudson Wren Portraits. Each portrait we deliver is meticulously finished with our signature style and elaborate artistry.

The portraits you choose and order will receive our highest level of artistry. We also offer complimentary modifications at your request to further enhance your portraits' beauty. These adjustments can include softening lines, removing stray hairs, whitening teeth, adjusting body proportions, and fixing clothing.

Importantly, we believe a portrait is a gift for your children, capturing the warmth of family love. As parents, we often critique ourselves, but to our children, these portraits epitomize family unity. They serve as powerful non-verbal expressions of love and value.

If you usually take the photos of your family or don't typically enjoy seeing yourself in pictures, prepare for a refreshing change. At Hudson Wren Portraits, our professionals leverage their expertise in lighting and posing to create flattering, authentic portraits that you'll love.

How will we know the right size for our portraits?

We're here to guide you through it. We've developed a unique review process that allows you to view your portraits in great detail.

Once you've selected your top favourites, they can be enlarged or reduced on our system for careful consideration. The process is exciting and fun! Typically one size will stand out and feel just right for you.

Additionally, we can guide what size would be most fitting for the portraits you've chosen based on their intended display location. We aim to ensure you feel completely confident and satisfied with your choices.

Do you offer weekend appointments?

Absolutely! We do accommodate select weekends at the Studio by appointment. Just reach out to inquire!

Our ordering and selection meetings are scheduled weekdays by appointment, held via Zoom. These meetings usually take place within 2 weeks of your session.

Who should attend the Zoom ordering appointment?

The Zoom Ordering Appointment is a key part of the process, and we strongly recommend both you and your spouse or partner attend. This ensures that everyone involved in the decision-making process, be it financial, aesthetic, or both has their say in the selection of the portraits.

Our experience shows that clients are more confident in their decisions when they're made together. If, for some reason, one of you cannot attend, we urge you to reschedule. This appointment is crucial in making choices that everyone feels happy and comfortable with.

How long will it take to receive my artwork?
Given the meticulous handcrafting by top artisans worldwide, our Wall Art Portraits and Boxes can take anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks to complete. We strive for quality above all and promise that your art pieces are worth the wait. Once ready, your artwork will be carefully packaged and shipped directly to your home for your convenience. If you've ordered Digital Artwork, you can expect this to be completed in around 2 weeks on average.

Wardrobe

What To Wear

You must carefully consider what you wear to shine in your portraits truly. Here's our guide on how to dress to impress in black and white studio portraits.

When in doubt, keep it simple. Classic styles and clean lines always work well in black-and-white photos. Avoid logos or graphics, as these can detract from the overall picture and may not translate well into black and white. Timeless pieces like a tailored suit, a crisp white shirt layered under a sweater, a little black dress, or a classic turtleneck always work well.

Texture adds richness and depth to your image that colours often can't match. Consider clothing with visible textures, such as a knitted sweater, a lace dress, or a leather jacket.

Accessories can make or break your outfit. Opt for simple, classic pieces that won't detract from your face.

Remember, the ultimate goal is to highlight you, not your outfit. Keep it simple and play with texture.

Formal and Semi-Formal – The time to elevate

Many families gravitate towards a formal or semi-formal aesthetic, embodying a sense of classic and timeless appeal. This look can range from sophisticated dresses and crisp suits to polished skirts and shirts. The beauty of this style lies in its versatility and its ability to add an air of elegance to your portraits.

Casual – Modern and Relaxed

A casual style is perfect for those looking for a more relaxed atmosphere in their portraits. Picture dark jeans paired with stylish button-up shirts for men, simple yet chic dresses or long skirts for women, or textured shirts and sweaters that add depth to the image. This style allows for comfort while still maintaining a high standard of fashion.

Top Tips:

  • Wear clothes you feel comfortable in and flatter your body. Long sleeves take away from the focus of your arms. Also, longer skirts or dresses allow us to have the flexibility of poses.

  • No graphics, logos or patterns

  • Ideally, men + boys will have haircuts 1-2 weeks before the portrait session and not immediately before

  • For women, touching up hair colour if needed is also ideal 1-2 weeks before the session.

  • Please keep your makeup as you usually wear it. Our artistic style doesn't require additional or heavy makeup.

  • Simple manicures and getting a good night's rest before your portrait session are recommended. Any additional time you invest in preparing for the portraits will pay off.

  • Black Socks!

  • Bring outfit changes.

  • Children can go barefoot.

  • For pets, allow for time to get to the groomers if necessary—otherwise, a bath and a fresh brush out work too.
